Arresto Menor

I'm in California.
My complaint has been filed, it was served and I have recieved the defendants answer, and now, I need to amend the complaint. Can I mail the amended complaint to the court and the defendant (using proof of service by mail) or do I have to have the defendant served by a process server again?
As a pro-se plaintiff and living over 200 miles from the court and defandants I am looking to save costs as I can.
