hello everyone! need help here.
We vacated our studio type unit last April 1. We agreed with the landlord that we'll collect the rental deposits when the billing for utilities arrive. After a month, when we asked him of the remaining collectible amount after deducting our unpaid utilities, he said he used our deposit to pay for the repairs and repainting our old unit.
Our rental deposit was 10,000. Utilities is 2k, and the remaining 8K, he used in repainting and repair expenses including the damaged door that was already damaged while we are still renting the place.
Does he have the right to use our deposit for such expenses? What can we do to claim our deposit?
Thanks!

check the contract. Typical contract states that the deposit will be used to repair the unit to bring it back to the condition it was before you took over the unit
