Hi everyone,
I'm just new here and I was looking for some advice on what to do. I opened an online account with a bank and told them i will need a visa card for my travel abroad. i applied online. when i picked up the card and went home, i registered the acct on their website. after realizing that i'm unable to log in, i called the bank's call center to ask why. they said my details have yet to be updated, and that it may take up to 48 hrs. fine. a week has passed and i still wasn't able to log in. within the first week of the dilemma i was advised the issue was because of a mismatch in my date of birth. the correction may take 24-48 hrs for the system to catch up.
i received a msg from one of the bank's staff saying my acct should be active within the day or two, forgetting to tell me there's a holiday in april 9. my resolution lasted longer than necessary. And my trip was April 9. i was prepared to book a hotel reservation by walking at least on the same day that i was in thailand. but not for the entire duration of my trip which would be 8 days.
when i was already in thailand i realized i was still unable to access the account. i sent them an urgent email and they responded in april 15. my flight back home was april 17. now that i have returned and spoke to them, they're claiming my account had been enrolled and activated in april 12. i said i did not receive any confirmation that my account was acitvated in april 12, otherwise, i would have used it as soon as. and i never received any confirmation to tell me that my enrollment was successful. the only confirmation i received was april 15.
is this qualified as unsound advice? my trip in thailand was greatly negatively impacted and some destinations were not met because of my inability to make online hotel reservations. hotels in thailand during the thailand new year is very scarce, and they prioritize online bookings. and i couldn't afford the high luxury ones.
what are my chances of asking to be compensated for all the trouble?
please help, thank you very much.

There's no such compensation on banks delays to produce or activate your bank card! You cannot rush bank especially if you ask for a credit card in the last minute! Credit card, bank card as such takes time to process and release! If you are smart enough you should have applied for a credit card months ahead before planning to travel!

thank you for your reply AWV.
i opened the account a week before my trip, after which I was given just the 24-48 hr time frame which i know is possible because i have opened the same type of card with them years ago.. and it would have been the second time i opened an account with them and never did i experience such a delay in my previous card.
and yes, i am smart enough that's why I never had a credit card.
thank you for your time.

I myself don't use or rely on credit cards! It's just a total rip off! I have a cash card which I can load according to what I want to spend! There are so many fraud nowadays and credit card may be a temptation but frankly speaking not worth of trouble!

Sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience due to the banks' delayed. I have encountered similar problem which resulted in losing 10,000 peso unauthorized withdrawal from my account. Sighting technical difficulties and change of management heads. I wasn't compensated even all my request was documented. Anyway, this is your story so I will not elaborate further.

I don't think you can claim anything. Just learn from this and apply early next time. Look ahead in time if there is any public holiday coming. This will save you hassles in the future.

Sorry that this happened to you. I had issues with our banking system here in the Philippines too. Frankly, give it up, I can assure you, u will not get compensation. Move your account to a different bank that u think will give a better service. Goodluck.

thank you so much arresto menor and elektra for replying. its very discouraging that you seem quite certain i won't get compensated for all the trouble. they said they are working on it. i think the least i could do is wait until they get in touch with me again and even if i don't get compensated, I think i'm going to escalate the matter and email their VP. They have an open chat with their VP on their website. Their service is really bad and no one should have to experience what I experienced from them.
Thanks again. =) have a great day

Im sorry, that wasnt my intention. Good luck then. Its just that if I were you I will save myself from all the heartaches and headaches. You already suffered enough mentally while on holiday. DO you want to go through that again every time you deal with the bank? I'm sure they have lawyers and underwriter who will protect their interests. Maybe you can get apologies from them at least.
