Hi,
I am Rommel Rustia. I would like to seek advice for my ongoing issue.
I have been renting in one of my friend's house, because I was having difficulty finding a decent job that's why my rent became on and off.
One day the owner decided to send us out and say they need their house renovated. I dealt with him my dues gave him 13 checks for 13 months then we left. Now I don't have a decent work again. And he is expecting payments. Am I still liable to pay him though we are no longer renting his house?

What do your contract say?
If you don't have any, it seem you have AGREED to 13 months by you gave him that amount of checks...

But ?? How come you made checks for 13 months if they were going to renovate??
Or was that postponed/skiped?

You can talk with the owner and ask if you can get SOME checks back by you don't live there, so he can rent out to someone else. Because as long as you pay, he can't rent it out.
An argument FOR YOU can be the owner can want a more secure paying tennant, so you can offer 1-3 months pay AFTER you say ok to let him rent out to other, By that you get the rest of the months back and the owner can get DOUBLE rent 1-3months. (I mean offer 1 month, and be ready to agree to some more.)

If you can't agree, you can try to get assistance from Barangay Captain, trying to get something similar to what I suggested.

The 13 checks was payment to what I owe him, because we can never leave the subdivision if not fully paid, so I issued the checks to make us leave. But now the I can no longer pay for the said checks because I have no more money.

Oh you had that big rent DEBT.

Then you are in big trouble, because it's a crime to wrote checks, which don't have cover when they are dated.
If I were you I would hurry to talk to the owner, before he file a case about your bouncing checks, and try to get an other agreement.
Are you handy? Perhaps the owner can agree to let you WORK off dept by for instance do renovation work. An argument is it's better for him to get free work done than geting nothing, because you have no money.

That's better.
If you see any WILL bounce, then you better talk to the owner BEFORE the bounce.
