Ignorance of fact and mistake of fact are both defense to remove criminal intent in a crime. In civil cases in could lead a favorable decision as this i a defense of good faith.

Example of ignorance of facts. A husband is not liable for bigamy for contracting marriage of a wife who after reasonable search of 10 years could not find his wife.

Example of mistake of facts. A person mistakenly shot a person who is not actually his target.
