Is is lawful for a Police Officer to get the License OR when a vehicular accident happens?

License OR? Why and for what purpose?

If you are involved in a vehicular accident, the officer is allowed to take and/or get your DRIVER'S LICENSE (id) and not the receipt.

Pls correct me if I'm wrong, ATTY's..
