Is there a legal basis for preventing a employee to be employed on competitor or client of an agency for a period of 1 year after end of contract?

The situation is the employment is a project basis (6 months contract) Since the company is a local agency which have many clients here. If ever you want not to renew the contract. This part of contract will prevent you from the opportunity to work in every client the agency has or the chance to be absorb if ever in a period of 1 year. Although without written consent include in the contract statement. It is somewhat trying to hold the employee on the agency and preventing to work directly. Of course if the employee is good there is always a possibility to be absorb but this kind of contract will prevent it to happen
