I am a New Zealander married (17 Apr 2012) to a Filipina. We both live and work in Singapore. Her daughter (6yrs) currently lives with her grandmother in Manila.
We would both obviously like to have her with us permanently but legal requirements seem to be complicated.
My stepdaughter has no father listed on her birth certificate as he (a foreigner) refused to acknowledge he was the father and returned to his own country. He has since refused to respond to any contact initiated by my wife over the years.
There are obvious benefits to my stepdaughter being able to live with us permanently, not the least being able to see her mother more than once a year. I teach at an international school here in Singapore, so if we can get her here long term she would be enrolled in the same school. Her grandmother is also not in the best of health, so there are obvious concerns for her well-being regarding that as well.
I realise that we will need to obtain legal advice and services from someone in Manila, but I would love to get an appreciation of our position, and hopefully good advice, before we do that.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
