Arresto Menor

I am currently working in a Bpo company here in cebu. I'm one of the pioneers in the company and its been 9 months since we started. We signed a contract last feb when we reached 6 months as an employee. Our contract stated that we are an Independent contractor. It states that the company is not liable for the payment of 13th month, sss, pag-ibig, philhealth and the taxes.
Is this legal?
I really don't have any ideas what an Independent Contrator mean and I wanted to file legal actions against the company can anyone help me what's the best thing than I can do . . .
